Be Brave

Welcome back!

Today, my scrapbook page is not a happy one. It's about a subject close to my heart. For 12 years we have been fighting a wind project that was planned to be built near our property and now it is finally under construction. 2,000 people live within 5kms of these enormous turbines and so many people in our community have fought long and hard to prevent our beautiful rural landscape from being industrialised. We have failed in this objective, however we did manage to get better noise monitoring and checking in place for those who will live closest to the turbines, which is something.

I'm not usually a negative person and I don't usually express emotions like these in my scrapping, however the challenge at More Than Words this month is to be inspired by the word 'Future' and to add 'Stars' to the project. No matter how much I thought about alternative topics for this, I always came back to the thought of how much our environment is about to change.

Here's what I made:

The torn paper indicates the many lives that have been torn apart here and the stitching represents how we've tried to help each other as much as possible. The stars show that there is hope that our community can deal with what's coming and move on.

The paper is a gorgeous one from 13arts. I wound cotton around the alphas and one of the stars and used the same cotton to roughly stitch across the tear. I've stamped some stars on the background but the main stars are cut from book paper. I adore book paper! I even put on a starry t-shirt for the photo - lol!

I hope you can join in our challenge this month. You can find the details here.

Happy scrappin'!

Heather

  1. Oh Heather this layout is so emotive, thanks for sharing about the embellishment of your page... I love pages that have meaning, and even the photo seems to portray a message.. I wish you and your community all the best with what is happening.. I guess I am sort of in a similiar boat as far as 'advancement' goes as we have a new highway being constructed near us.. progress hey...??? all the trees taken away and put up a massive highway.. hummm... Your page is amazing...

  4. I love that you scrapped about this! We have a million of those turbines on the way to California, so we see them every time we drive there. I hope your community can work together to make it through this. I love that photo of you, and the meaning behind everything you added is just wow!

  5. It's important that we scrap about the good the bad and everything in between...Brava! I feel so sad that this project is going ahead despite the objections of the people that have to be surrounded by the turbines day in and day out. I hope no one's health is affected as a result of their intrusion into your beautiful landscape. Your layout depicts your dilemma perfectly with the ripped paper, half a photo, the stitching and threads and the stars. Thanks for sharing your story; sending light and love your way.

  6. This is an amazing page Heather! So emotive and so well though out!! I love the symbolism of each of the embellishments and you are so brave to scrap about this terrible dilemma. Sad that you didn't win your fight. Seems to me the powers that be are more concerned with appeasing big business than they are about listening to the people. I sincerely hope you and your community will not be impacted too greatly. Thank you for sharing. hugs xx

    1. Thanks Margaret. I think the problem is just as much about votes and power as big business. The little guys are expendable it seems.

  7. This is a wonderful Layout Heather !! I love how you have expressed your ideas! Great!
Unfortunately, this world is in the hands of big companies and banks, actually ... it's in the hands of money and power. We have to be very brave and strong to be able to fight against all these adversities, which, on the other hand, give us the hope of a positive change for the world.
    Much encouragement, and keep fighting.
I send you a big hug, Caty

  9. Lovely page Heather and I believe scrapping can be a great way of expression and how we feel... Sadly our beautiful land is slowly being taken over by industrial greeds and no thought for the people at all....if only they could see our beautiful country. sending hugs.xx
